Halal Meditation in Ramadan: Praying Salah Tarawih and Tahajjud (Salatu-l-Leyle)

Updated: Apr 22, 2023

Ramadan is a blessed month in which Muslims all around the world strive to get closer to Allah (SWT) through fasting, praying, and engaging in acts of worship. One of the best ways to meditate and achieve tranquility during this month is by performing Salah Tarawih and Tahajjud (Salatu-l-Leyle) prayers. These prayers can help to purify the soul and draw us closer to our Creator.

Hadith Quote:

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "Whoever prays during the night in Ramadan out of sincere faith and seeking reward from Allah, all his previous sins will be forgiven." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Quran:

"Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation. And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion." (Surah Al-Muzzammil, 73:6-8)

Performing Salah Tarawih:

Tarawih prayers are offered in congregation after the Isha prayer during the month of Ramadan. It consists of 8 or 20 rak'ahs (units of prayer), typically performed in sets of two. Reciting and listening to the Quran during these prayers allows for deeper reflection and meditation on the divine guidance, helping to achieve a state of inner peace and tranquility.

Performing Tahajjud (Salatu-l-Leyle):

Tahajjud, also known as the night prayer, is performed in the last third of the night before the Fajr prayer. The Tahajjud prayer can vary in length, typically consisting of a minimum of two rak'ahs, but can be increased according to one's ability and devotion. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged performing Tahajjud to seek closeness to Allah (SWT), as mentioned in the following hadith:

"The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer." (Muslim)

In summary, engaging in Salah Tarawih and Tahajjud prayers during the month of Ramadan is a beautiful and halal way to meditate and achieve spiritual elevation. These prayers allow Muslims to connect with Allah (SWT), seeking His forgiveness, guidance, and mercy, ultimately leading to a more tranquil and content state of being. May Allah (SWT) accept our prayers and grant us the strength and dedication to maintain these acts of worship throughout the blessed month of Ramadan. Ameen.
